Episode 59 of The Poe Underground Podcast is called, Ghouls and Goblins. This is our 3rd Halloween themed Halloween podcast episode and one I’m very proud of. This year I was able to compose a few tracks of music using strings mixed in with electric guitar and some synthesizers. In fact, today is the first day where I realize that my goal of becoming a composer when I was 19 yrs. old has been realized. I’ve always wanted to be able to compose for strings, whether solo or orchestral. The real orchestra hasn’t happened yet but I have used real violin and viola in some of my recent recordings.
Most “string” compositions are of course samples of real instruments. While that idea might bother some, it doesn’t bother me whatsoever. These string samples where performed by real professional orchestral musicians. They are the closest thing you’ll get to working with a full ensemble of players for most producers anyhow.
Strings are great for composing spooky music. I know this might sound obvious to some people, but I’d like to think that almost any instrument can be made to sound spooky. While I think this might be generally true, I also think it’s far easier to make strings sound especially scary.
In this episode I wanted to blend my recent explorations with electric guitar finger-picking, with strings. I believe I succeeded in finding an element of creepiness which lends itself to the mood of Halloween. Check out Ghouls and Goblins on The Poe Underground Poetry and Music Podcast.
